About Us

Wire Magic is the course work for a Jewellery Design course through the New York Institute of Art and Design.  I have been making and selling jewellery for a few years and have always enjoyed learning new techniques.  When I saw this course I jumped at the chance to learn new techniques and learn more about the business side of selling jewellery.  I always enjoy working with wire so for the jewellery line that we create in the last couple of units, it seemed logical to use only wire, no beads at all!  It was a new experience creating pieces with a limited colour palette and using only a few techniques.  I had also never really tried to make a whole collection of pieces that related to each other so that was an interesting challenge.

Pink, blue and purple are my favourite colours and I really like the contrast of the three metals – silver, gold and copper – together.  I like how copper darkens with age.  And I’m a spiral girl, so I put spirals and coils in lots of my pieces.  I’m what a friend calls a “serial crafter”, meaning I also sew, crochet and knit so being able to use those techniques to create my jewellery is really exciting.

Wire Magic is Becky Murray-Nicholls and based in Auckland, New Zealand.  When I’m not making and selling jewellery, I’m raising two teenage kids, facilitating a parenting course called SPACE, and doing accounts for my husband’s small software company.
